Tommy Docks: Choosing the Right Dock Materials

When it’s time to replace your old dock or install a new one altogether, you’ll want to consider a handful of things to make the right choice. The shape and size of your dock are usually the first things that come to mind. Of course, there are also the accessories you’ll buy along with the main dock package. Don’t forget one key element to a dock you might be overlooking: the materials.

Stationary docks can come in a variety of frame and decking materials that will be important to consider before making a purchase. Here are some of the best ways to ensure you’re choosing the right materials for your new dock.

What is the Best Option for Choosing the Right Dock Materials

When it comes to your personal needs and requirements for a dock, that’s going to be a subjective decision you make. That said, we can provide a brief overview of what materials are most effective for your various concerns.

Cedar

Cedar decking and framing come with our classic dock package. These materials are wonderful and a classic way to approach building a new dock. You get the best value from your purchase of a cedar dock because the cost is lower than other materials.

Likewise, many aim to go for the wood look since it’s what many think of when they imagine a dream dock. Lastly, the cedar used at Tommy Docks is ethically sourced and environmentally conscious in terms of its collection and production.

If you don’t want to go completely down the cedar route, our Classic+ option is a great way to go. It introduced another popular material related to docks: aluminum.

Aluminum

As you see in our complete boat dock packages, every option above the Classic package involves aluminum. This material is a favorite of modern dock owners and builders for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a bit more low maintenance than cedar or other woods. With aluminum, you have far less upkeep and a slower deterioration over the years than you see with wood or lumber.

Also, aluminum is lightweight, making it easy to set up a dock and withstand the water. As you can imagine, docks can get put through the wringer depending on what type of water they’re on. Thanks to its lightweight design, aluminum is sturdy and flexible enough to withstand the elements. Of course, if you want to step things up a notch, you can always go the route of composite which is found in the Premium option.

Composite

One step above traditional wood, composite has the look of wood but is built with marine grade protections to keep things strong enough to last decades. While you might think that composite sounds like a cheaper-looking option, you’d be surprised to see the look of Tommy Docks’ composite finishes.

It’s like having the best visual element of wood without the worry of decay and deterioration. That leaves us with one final material to cover and you’ll want to consider this option if you’re serious about a deck that you can enjoy for the long haul.

Titan Decking

Last but not least, our Platinum dock package features titan decking. This finish is a strong polypropylene that goes great with aluminum to provide a modern look and strength to your dock. While you won’t get the classic wood look with titan decking, you do get an enhanced construction that is sure to last a long time.
